Goodbye 2018 - Hello Fabulous 2019!

Writing the title of this blog post almost makes me laugh. It seems like every blogger has an obligatory post to write for the changing of the year. Maybe it’s because most of us are driven by the belief that a new year brings a new us, new goals, or new adventures. I know I am driven by this belief, which is why I’m so excited for the clock to strike midnight tonight.

I may believe in the idea of “new year, new you”, but I don’t believe in resolutions. I think that resolutions are hard for people to keep because there is so much pressure to publicly declare what you’ll change for the year or they place unrealistic or goals on the table that they cannot achieve. So, for me, I’d rather raise my glass to goals for 2019 than resolutions.

My goals for this year are simple:

  1. Enjoy working for myself;

  2. Enjoy spending more time with my family; and

  3. Forgive myself when I am hard on myself.

These seem like pretty vague goals, but I did that for a reason. I understand the principle behind S.M.A.R.T. goals, but I also recognize that I need a year of flexibility after working structured jobs my entire adult life. I need this year to be whatever it’s going to be, and not try to control every aspect of it.

2018 was a hard, busy year for me. I left my traditional job and started my own business. I got married to my amazingly supportive husband. I went on a multi-state vacation less than 30 days after getting married. And, for extra fun, I survived a large earthquake with more than 5,000 aftershocks associated with it.

Which is why my motivation for this week is 2018. I look back, while making my family’s photo book (which is officially too large for Shutterfly’s standard book so we’ll have two volumes), I have realized that if I can survive 2018 then I can certainly roll with whatever punches 2019 will bring. More inspiring, though, 2018 taught me that I can also roll with whatever happiness 2019 brings.

Cheers to you, 2019. I’m coming at you with a smile on my face, an open mind, and a heart full of determination and adventure!
